Deja Vu - The Spell Recast

Saturday night.

After Thursdays yawner at DJV we decided to go somewhere else, that we had ignored our duties as benevolent club reviewers too long. With absolutely good intentions we get in the MorleyMobile and head towards the Van Nuys Spearmint Rhino. Time: 9:20.

For whatever reason the traffic on the 101 towards Van Nuys wasn't moving and we're getting antsy. Time: 9:35.

Shit. What are we antsy for?

And it hits us. At DJV the waitresses change at 10:00. We wanted to see which waitresses were going off shift and which were coming on. We figured, saturday night, at least one of our three favorites (Rachel, Gabrielle, or Mary) had to be there.

Screw the 101. We veer on to the 405, blast up to Sherman Way, and scream for traffic to move aside. We were on a mission.

We get there at 9:50 and the place is definitely more lively than it was on Thursday. But first the waitress rolecall:

Mary? Nope.
Rachel? Nada.
Gabrielle? Not in sight.

Uh, oh. Will this be another Thursday? We take our now usual seats off to the side and wait to be served. Wait. Wait. 5 minutes. 10 minutes. Waitresses are around. We can see them. they just never come to our area. 15 minutes. What the hell?!? We both showered this week.

Finally at the 20 minute mark we get helped by...she never said her name...but cute and friendly. Fine, whatever.

We watch the dancers. Hey, unlike Thursday, we can name some of them: HennesseyCharms or maybe it's CharmsHennessey - not too sure. Nikki. Jane. Zoe. Mia.

That's an improvement.

Another waitress comes by to check on us. She looks very familiar. Big smile.

"I'm Mary's cousin." she says.

"Lindsey!" we say in unison.

"Everything OK?" she asks.

"It is now," we reply and it was. She lightened up the evening and helped recast the spell that is DJV. Now we have four favorite waitresses.

Highlights:

  • Raine should be called Thunder for the electricity she brings. Enough said.
  • One more thing about Raine...she's exotic looking and it was driving Morley nuts to know where she was from.
    Raine: "Fresno."
    Yeah, that's pretty exotic.
  • The Manager came by and introduced himself, letting us know if there was anything we needed. That was a nice appreciated gesture.
  • No TrainWreck!!!

    Lowlights:
  • We asked the Manager about Never Tame and he said she had injured her side, couldn't dance. We wish her a speedy recovery.
  • The AC wasn't up to par.
  • The music was way too loud and added to the heat.

By the time we left at 1:30, DJV was packed and hopping, reminding us again why it's tops in the Valley. But the next time we go out it will be to someplace new. Really.
