New Business Model for Adult Entertainment Clubs

If you've read our earlier posts, you know we're searching for a new adult entertainment business model. We feel the current business model is dying. This is supported from talking to dancers and seeing too many empty clubs. Sure, it's a tough economy but there are ways to turn the money drip into a decent trickle.

We've found a viable solution. One that, if we may use some bullshit terminology, increases the revenue stream while increasing the entertainment value. It's a change, top to bottom, but one without too much, if any, cash outlay. It's more process improvement after an addition.

Morley and I have, between us, years(!) of experience in this sort of endeavor in a non-entertainment capacity. What we would do is visit your establishment, note how things currently work (or don't), and provide you with a report of how to incorporate our model into your business as well as other improvements.

If you're an owner or manager of an entertainment establishment, preferably in the San Fernando Valley area, and are willing to discuss about a new business model, we want to meet with you. If anything, it will help us refine the model and possibly - no, probably, help your business.

If you're interested, please contact us at dimmbros@gmail.com.

Desire

Morley and I had a free evening Saturday. We decided on going to dinner, of course, but what of entertainment? Our initial thought was to return to Downtown LA to revisit Club Fantasy to see whether it held up as our #1 LA non-nude entertainment location.

But we're always looking for something new and a revisit wasn't wowwing us. We decided to catch a comedy club on Ventura. Off we went - 3 hours early.

40 minutes to downtown. We could still, theoretically, visit Club Fantasy and make the comedy club. Nah, with this much time let's go to...

[An aside. Always, always, always, when trolling for entertainment in LA, pick up a copy of the LA Weekly. Get one copy for each person in your group. The coupons for the entertainment clubs are helpful.]

Desire. This place is on Bellaire near Saticoy. We were a bit reluctant to spend strip clubs prices but the place was somewhat close to our real evening's fun. What the hell.

And it wasn't bad. Arguably it was the best LA strip club we've visited to date. Not Shotgun Willies great but not bad. Since we were there early there were only about 5 guys in the place, including us. I counted about 8 girls working, not bad but usually that means we could expect to be approached constantly. That didn't happen.

Here's what they did right:
  • We had coupons for free admission but still had to pay $5 for drinks. Fine. We both gave the cashier $20s. He gave us both $15 in singles. Nice move. Made it convenient for us and more likely to spend.
  • Not too many "niche" dancers, "niche" meaning plump or mature or overly tattooed, the type that will attract maybe 1 guy out of 10.
  • Quite a few good looking dancers. Some were smoking hot. (Lisa!)
  • Although they had one big stage, the chairs were nicely horseshoed in three rows around it. The chairs were comfortable too.
  • We weren't bombarded with lap dance offers. Sure, they came around but the girls were very polite.

Here's where they needed some work:
  • The younger girls were cute but they didn't know how to work a conversation. As a quiet guy, I expect the girl to keep the conversation going or to cut to the offer. Don't waste either of our time. The aforementioned Lisa was beautiful but ended up quietly sitting next to me. I didn't mind the close-up eye candy but it was a tad awkward.
  • Turn the music down. Yo, Mr. DJ!! Check out your audience. If it's small or made up of older guys turn the music down. It was hard to hear the girls talking to us.
  • Change the music. Again, Mr. DJ, know your audience. Us older guys aren't into hip-hop or rap. Try some classic rock.
  • Enough with the strobe. In fact, get rid of it. Not only couldn't we see the girls dancing but it's downright annoying.
  • Like other places, a little too much down time. We know that when the girls aren't dancing, they're trolling for lapdances.

  • In summary, it was a decent $20 spent for an hour.

    Club Fantasy

I have seen the light, or at least the future for the Dimmbros. No more strip clubs. Morley, Randolph and I went to Club Fantasy on 4th at Hill in Downtown LA. Randolph had been there a few times and had been saying that we had to go. Morley and I were suspicious, more so as we drove through downtown at night, not a place for visiting.

The security guard moved the cones so we could enter the private parking lot. OK. The security guard outside the entrance gave the three of us The Look as we entered and descended the stairs. What the hell? The Club was underground? What was Randolph leading us into? We heard slow music as we walked down the hallway and entered.

That's when the differences to a strip club became apparent.

First, the entrance was $7 as opposed to $20 (or $10 with a coupon). Second, we go to the girls. They don't come to you. Third, they don't rip you off on drinks.

Club Fantasy is hostess dancing. You choose a girl and go into a "Couples Only" area where you can dance or just sit and talk, or watch TV. Your choice. There's no nudity, at least, none that the Security should catch.

The challenge is asking a girl. The problem is two-fold. One, you have a bunch of guys who want to ask a girl but just can't so they sit or stand around. That's a strange feeling. The other problem is that the girls sit on couches and it does tend to be a bit dark in the place. You can't really walk around and scope them out - you could but it'd be somewhat impolite - so you tend to wait to see them get up. It would help tremendously if the girls would periodically walk around. They'd get more action that way guaranteed.

I selected a girl who, on a scale of 1 to 10, would get a conservative rating of, ummm, 10. She was a petite latina with a perfect face and body (No tats. No implants.) and a super sweet personality. She was simply precious. For an old fart like me to spend an hour with her, talking and dancing, was just nice.

And here's what made it so great. For a 5-minute lap dance at a strip club you'd be looking at $40 easy. The hour - one full hour - I spent with this gorgeous woman cost $30.

You pay by the minute (minimum 10 minutes) but at that price you can sample for next to nothing. $5 to close-dance with a girl. Don't like her? Try another.

The girls. I'd say the three of us did rather well. My little latina was spectacular. When I clocked her out she was immediately clocked right back in. Randolph also hooked up with a cute latina and Morley found himself a tall Chinese-American. For the most part the girls tend towards Latina and American but not the tattooed skanks you commonly find at a strip joint. Yes, quite a few had implants. Some were "mature" but they had a nice variety and at least half were most acceptable.

Speaking for myself, that's it for strip clubs, except for Shotgun Willies. There's a new heaven in town and it's Club Fantasy.

    High-end Adult Cinema

Morley and I just saw a film at the Arclight Cinemas in Sherman Oaks and reminisced about the Pussycat Theaters and how there's now no adult theaters around. Nothing worth mentioning at least. Morley suggested a high-end adult cinema, one where you get your food and drinks, a dance perhaps, and a movie.

It's a good question but would it be good business? Would it be enough to drag people off the Internet porn sites. I think it would depend on the quality of the movies and the cost. Internet porn is essentially free. What's lacking is the convenience. Unless you have your computer hooked up to a large screen monitor in your bedroom, you're either watching porn on a small screen while sitting on a chair, or you rent/buy your porn from a video store. I think the stores are suffering too so I'm going with small screen internet porn.

Most inconvenient but the most private.

How then, to coax people out to an adult film? Perhaps offer it as a club-type atmosphere with limited seating or as a true club so you can offer much "more". I don't know. Any thoughts out there or are adult theaters, strip clubs, and video stores being strangled by net porn?
